When I headed out of the studio, I drove past where the old bowling street had actually stood. As soon as, because car park, I made a bet influenced by the 1967 movie Cool Hand Luke. In the movie, Paul Newman's character ate 50 boiled eggs while in a Florida jail. So I boasted I could consume 50 raw ones.
I was a hero for about 15 minutes and the owner of a bellyache for 2 days. I found other residues of Gladewater's rockabilly past, like the Res-Mor Courts Motel on West Upshur Opportunity, where Elvis and others boarded when they weren't remaining in regional houses as guests. Apparently, there's even a visitor card someplace in presence with Elvis' signature on it, and a notation of which room he occupied.
This was rare back when the best most locations could manage for fighting the humid East Texas heat were moist swamp coolers, turning fans, an open window, or a cold shower. Though the Res-Mor is no longer the uncommon air-conditioned business it as soon as was, I hope brand-new ownership leaves the old sign with its boast undamaged as a classic echo to a fading past.
I was exploring Gladewater history at large, and The Gladewater Museum was the best location for that. It was when the town library, but was changed into a museum in 2005. As Research It Here , I invested Saturdays and time after school sitting and checking out there, taking a look at stacks of books to brighten a rather drab existence.
On Saturdays, I 'd read in the early mornings at the library, stroll over to Ritz Pharmacy (now a cool coffee and ice cream shop called The Screen Door), and buy a hamburger and a Coke. After a quick lunch, I 'd head next door to what was then The Comfortable Theater but is now an opry house.
I 'd see the kid show, animations, and an old-time experience serial that I didn't realize wasn't new, and after that remain for the double feature. At that time they didn't run you out when the films were over. You could stay for another run through both films, and I typically did. The library and theater were redemption to me.
