My husband and I recently bought a 3.5 gallon Royal Berkey Water Filter. I am excited because this water filter is so high quality that it can filter impurities out of pond water and make it safe to drink! Of course, as the manual that came with the filter says, we should use the highest quality water available to put through our Berkey.
This system is not intended for saltwater or softened water. I did not realize this when we bought the Berkey best product review sites 2021. We are on a well, and we soften our water with salt pellets, so I am thinking that we will run our softened tap water through our Brita filter before we put it in the Berkey. The Berkey manual doesn’t say to do that, but I think it might help. Fortunately, the water that comes out of our tap does not taste salty at all. In addition, I don’t believe the Berkey removes nitrates from water.
Another alternative to using tap water in the Berkey would be to buy the gallons of water in plastic at the store and put that water in the Berkey. A third option would be to install a reverse-osmosis water filtration system in your kitchen for use in the Berkey (though I think that might eliminate some of the need for the Berkey.) A fourth option would be to collect rainwater and put that through the Berkey.
The instruction booklet does recommend pre-filtering water with high particulates through a clean cloth or pre-treating suspected microbe-contaminated water with bleach before putting in the Berkey. If we only had low quality water to put in the Berkey, we would need to clean the Berkey more often. We could save water that has gone through the Berkey to use to clean the Berkey.
