One of the main aides to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky survived an assassination attempt when his car was fired upon by unknown persons.

So far it is unknown who carried out the shooting, but Zelensky said it could be a foreign or domestic attack.

The Kremlin categorically denies Russian involvement.

Describing the moment the bullet hit his vehicle, Shefir said "we had to speed up a little bit, it was scary".

He praised his driver, who he said managed to continue driving after "shots were heard".

Shefir suspects he was being targeted in an attempt to intimidate the "highest echelons of power" and insists such an attempt will not work.

"We have to understand that our president [Zelensky] is strong-willed, he has support and cannot be intimidated," he added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later promised a serious response to the aide's assassination attempt.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said any suggestion about relations with Moscow contained "signs of an overzealous emotional state".

"Unfortunately at the moment, no matter what is happening in Ukraine, no current politician can set aside Russia's trail," said Dmitry Peskov.

The Ukrainian president condemned the shooting.
