The alternating passages in F use the Lydian scale with sharp 4th scale degree exclusively.
35, No. 5, released in 1848) is written strictly in F Lydian, with no B's present at all. Anton Bruckner utilized the sharpened 4th of the Lydian scale in his motet (1879) more strictly than Renaissance composers ever did when composing in this mode. In the 20th century, authors began when again to make use of modal scales with some frequency.
14. An example from the middle of the century is the scherzo movement of Carlos Chvez's Symphony No. 3 (195154 ). The movement opens with a fugue subject, featuring exceptionally broad leaps, in C Lydian with following entries in F and G Lydian. Alexei Stanchinsky composed a Prelude in Lydian mode previously in the 20th century.
